There are various types of Engagement Rings, most are
either solitaires or semi-mounts. Some engagement rings may include a
wedding band, many do not. Many rings are price driven, others stress
quality. Same is true with gemstones. Diamonds are the overwhelming choice
for a center stone, however, many people have purchased a colored stone for
their engagement ring. Wedding bands are popular with men, most women prefer
an engagement ring, particularly
a diamond
engagement ring. The most common metals for engagement rings are usually
white or yellow
gold or platinum. Manufacturers and designers are coming out with other
metals including titanium, tungsten, palladium as well as other
combinations. The list will continue to grow as new metals are introduced
into the marketplace. One word of caution, however, and that is the metal
should compliment the gemstone, for instance, gold and platinum generally
cost more than other metals and the stone should reflect that. If you are
buying an expensive stone you wouldn't want to use an inexpensive
metal. |

Solitaires
Solitaires are just what the term implies, a single stone.
Almost universally accepted is a diamond for a single stone, hence the term
diamond
solitaire.

The rings on this page are traditional and designer styles.
Other popular styles are art deco, antique, & pave'.

Eternity Bands
Eternity Bands, sometimes referred to as wedding bands,
diamond bands, gemstone bands, and now the latest eternity engagement rings
etc., are rings with the diamonds (gemstones) all around the band. Some do
offer a "spacer" area at the bottom of the band for sizing purposes.
Some examples are (you can click on the pictures too):

One of the latest trends is to take a stone out of the
eternity band, mount a crown in its spot and set a larger diamond into the
crown creating an engagement ring!!!

Semi-Mounts
Semi-mounts are engagement rings with more than one stone.
The center tends to be the major stone---side stones can be one or numerous.
They maybe symmetrical or asymmetrical. In this category also there may be
stones without a large center, they may be equal in size or they may not.
Center Stones extra!
Three Stone Ring

Some people prefer to purchase a colored
stone for their center stone instead of a diamond. The most common colored
stones are Ruby and Sapphire (Ruby and Sapphire are the hardest natural
stones after diamond and really the only ones durable to be used as a center
stone. Some people do have an emerald or tanzanite for a center stone, however,
both are more fragile and are subject to more breakage. Make sure you
understand the Mohs hardness if you want a center stone other than a
diamond, ruby or sapphire. |
